Appeal for release of environmental campaigner Yevgeni Vitishko
18 February 2015
The NHC joined a letter to the Russian Prosecutor General questioning the imprisonment of environmental campaigner Yevgeni Vitishko, a member of the Russian NGO Environmental Watch North Caucasus. He has been imprisoned since February 2014, the month of the Sochi Olympics. His organization was active documenting and protesting the environmental effects of the Games.
Vitishko himself was convicted in connection with charges of damaging a fence. Serious doubts exist about the legality of the fence, about whether and how he himself actually damaged the fence, and about the fairness of the trial of Vitishko.
