New publication: The Human Rights Alternative Reporting Cycle
The Human Rights Alternative Reporting Cycle is a step-by-step guide through the United Nations human rights reporting process for NGOs. It supports more effective advocacy for NGOs at the United Nations and in the follow-up of UN conclusions.
It has been developed as a result of a multi-year cooperation of the Netherlands Helsinki Committee with NGOs in Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. The NHC has worked with these NGOs in a number of different UN reporting procedures. The guide is based on these experiences but also takes on board best practices from other parts of the world. It is applicable to reporting and advocacy on any country.
The manual presents the reporting and advocacy steps in a simple cycle. Each step comes with specific questions NGOs should think about and tips and tricks for NGOs to use. This is complemented by practical exercises.
The guide is aimed at NGOs with little or no experience in using the UN system, as well as at more experienced NGOs. Using the guide can make a substantial difference in the quality of the work being done, and, ultimately, in the advocacy undertaken.
The guide is available online only, with direct links in the text to a large number of external sources. It is available in English, and also Russian.
