Statement | In solidarity with Azerbaijani Journalists
Statement on the Recent Arrests of Journalists in Azerbaijan
The Netherlands Helsinki Committee expresses grave concern over recent incidents in Azerbaijan, particularly the police raiding the office of independent media outlet Toplum TV and the subsequent arrests of multiple independent journalists and civil society activists. The continued crackdown on the freedom of expression in Azerbaijan is deeply troubling and must cease immediately. No individual should face persecution for exercising their right to freedom of speech.
We strongly urge the Azerbaijani government to immediately cease these oppressive actions, release all individuals unjustly detained in politically motivated cases, including previously arrested journalists of Abzas Media and Dr. Gubad Ibadoghlu, and adhere to its international obligations to uphold democratic principles and human rights.
Furthermore, we call upon the international community to join us in condemning these activities and to pressure the Azerbaijani government to cease its crackdown on the freedom of and respect the fundamental rights of its citizens.
The Netherlands Helsinki Committee stands in solidarity with the journalists and civil society activists in Azerbaijan who are bravely advocating for the advancement of a free and open society. We will continue to monitor the situation closely and support efforts to uphold democratic values and protect human rights in Azerbaijan and beyond.
